We all know that when we are having a
bad day, we can count on our pets to cheer us up. It is amazing that pets have the ability to change our mood with just their
presence alone. It is a powerful thing. Animals are being used more commonly as therapy pets in hospitals
and extended care facilities. One of Delton Veterinary Hospital’s Animal Health Technicians, Kasey
has had the opportunity to volunteer with her dogs at an extended care facility for seniors.
Kasey has been volunteering at St. Michaels Health Group for approximately
the past 6 months with her two dogs, Kooper and Sophie. Kasey takes one of her dogs to visit several residents, usually for
one hour at a time. The purpose of her visit is to share her dogs with the people who are in extended care and allow them
to interact with an animal. Many of these residents had dogs or other animals in the past and really enjoy the company of
a dog. It allows them interact with something familiar. It is amazing how enthusiastic the residents are about having a dog
come to visit.
Depending on where
the therapy pet is placed, the requirements vary. In order to be a therapy dog at St. Michaels Group, the dog must be
friendly, approachable and have basic obedience. In addition, the dog must have up to date vaccinations and a current
clean bill of health from a veterinarian.
St. Michaels Health Group is still looking for more dogs to place in their pet therapy program. If
you have a dog that fits the criteria, and you are interested being a part of this important program, please
visit www.smhg.ca for more information about volunteering.
