Should I buy my child or loved one a pet for Christmas?
No, don’t do it.  Pets make inappropriate gifts, with very few exceptions.  For the gifted, it’s like receiving a pair of shoes from someone who doesn’t know the size, shape, and other nuances of your foot - this is destined to be a painful experience.  If you are determined to provide someone with a pet, help that someone find out what is involved in the care of the animal they want.  If after careful research someone still desires it, then you should both stop by the local humane society or rescue organization to see if they have what you are looking for.  If they do not have such a pet or if you want a purebred, seek out a reputable breeder.

How can I help those small companion animals who have no home?
If your home and lifestyle cannot comfortably accommodate another pet, try donating to the Edmonton Humane Society or some other rescue organization that operates in the capital city / northern Alberta region.  The people involved in these organizations have big hearts and run a thrifty budget.  If you want to do something other than donate dollars ask these organizations about volunteering.
If you are a cat lover, you may also want to donate food to shelter cats through Hill’s Science Diet “Change a Life” campaign.
