Bird Services

Providing routine checkups and urgent care to birds of all types.

Contact Us

They’re beautiful, intelligent and come in a wide variety of breeds. In recent years, winged creatures have become even more popular with families both here and all over the world. Whether you enjoy the snarky commentary from a parrot, or the pretty songs from a canary, there is a bird for all animal lovers out there. Our team here at Delton Veterinary Hospital can help you keep your feathery friend as healthy as possible. Unlike other companion animals, they can be trickier to take care of, but with our help you will always be on top of all your responsibilities as their owner. Don’t hesitate to reach out to us at 780-475-9225 to learn more about our bird services.

What is the easiest bird to keep as a pet?

This is a difficult question to answer. It all depends on your lifestyle – your daily routine, your family, the kind of home you have and more. If you have young children or are a beginner when it comes to pet ownership, we recommend budgies, female cockatiels (more gentle than the males), finches and parakeets.

How should I care for my bird?

Although there may be variations based on breed, in general all birds need a spacious and clean cage where they can climb and spread their wings, bird feeders with fresh food and water, toys, exercise and of course attention from you and the other humans in your home. Proper socialization is also key. Most birds will need to be around you and your family because they will see you as their flock. It’s best if they are not isolated or separated in a room all by themselves. We recommend keeping them in a place in your home that sees a lot of foot traffic or where you spend most of your time.

How do I know if my pet bird is sick?

The signs to watch out for are usually changes in your pet’s appearance and behaviour. If you see the following in your feathery friend, please contact us right away:

  • Decreased eating and drinking
  • Limited mobility
  • Ratty or dull feathers
  • Drooping wings
  • Sitting at the bottom of the cage
  • Rapid weight loss/gain
  • Laboured breathing
  • Change in voice
