The benefits of acupuncture for human health are known all over the world. Did you know it is also a great treatment for the furry members of your family? It has been clinically proven to help decrease symptoms of pets with illnesses and improve the wellbeing of pets who are already in good shape. In the veterinary world, it is often prescribed alongside Western medicine to improve efficacy and reduce side effects. To learn more about our acupuncture services for pets here at Delton Veterinary Hospital, please call us at 780-475-9225.

How can acupuncture help my pet?

The benefits of acupuncture in pets is quite similar to that in humans. It is an ideal therapy for joint pain, chronic pain, allergies, digestive issues, arthritis, epilepsy, stroke, asthma, skin allergies and many more. Even if your pet has no ailment, it can be a great maintenance or preventative treatment especially for pets who are very active (sports, hunting, etc.) and experience a lot of strain on their joints and muscles.

How do pets get acupuncture?

The procedure is 100% safe and painless. Before anything else, our team will do proper checks to ensure your pet is a good candidate. For example, we would need to take extra care and avoid certain body areas for pets who are pregnant or those who have inflamed skin. A single treatment takes about 20 to 30 minutes. Tiny needles are inserted into targeted areas of the body. This stimulates circulation, the nervous system, and the release of beneficial chemicals.

What is an alternative to pet acupuncture?

If your furry friend is particularly anxious, we can also recommend acupressure. This involves the use of finger/hand pressure to stimulate circulation in different parts of the body. Most pets find acupuncture very relaxing. In fact, it is common for them to fall asleep during the procedure because it is so soothing!
